Rapid response team launched to combat foot-and-mouth disease

Dr. Frikkie Maré, CEO of the Red Meat Producers Organisation, emphasized that establishing a rapid response team will significantly enhance government capacity and expedite decision-making processes regarding Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD). He noted that FMD is a controlled and notifiable disease, which restricts the private sector’s ability to respond to outbreaks without government approval. Historically, the government’s consultations with the industry before making decisions have contributed to delays. However, the formation of this rapid response team, comprising both private and state veterinarians, represents a crucial shift towards collaborative efforts between government and industry, enabling a more unified and efficient response to disease outbreaks.
